Health Foundations and My Breeding Role

I take my role as a Breeder very seriously, and this begins with the health and DNA profile of Mama and Stud.  Consciously bring puppies into this world, I need to do all that I can to ensure that I provide every possible chance of health and well-being success to Mama and her pups.

Breeding & Health at Trinkaurity Cockers

  • I monitor the health and well-being of all my dogs, no matter their age, and this is continually throughout the year.
  • My dogs are all Veterinarian health checked every 6 months, as well as prior to breeding.
  • My dogs all receive daily exercise, enrichment and undertake a variety of stimulating training programs*.
  • It is really important to me that they each live an engaging and enriched life.
  • They receive monthly worming, flea and tick preventative treatment, all annual vaccinations as part of my Veterinary Practice’s Healthy Pet Club.
  • They all receive all of their annual vaccinations including Kennel Cough.
  • They are all extensively DNA tested.
  • My dogs who are considered for breeding, are all BVA eye screened annually and Gonioscopy screened every 3 years are recommended.
  • All health test documents are published within my Private Facebook Group, exclusively for Trinkaurity Waiting List families and Puppy Parents, as well as in person during visits, which is available for puppy parents to view.
  • I will always microchip scan all resident dogs during initial visit, inclusive without fail, of Mama (dam of the litter) in front of new Parents, and cross reference this against their formal paperwork.
  • I will only breed from health tested, Kennel Club Registered parents with a low COI (inbreeding score).
  • Parents must be fit, healthy, free from disease/illness/infestations (worms/fleas/mites).
  • Mama and Stud must not be affected of the common DNA diseases that attribute to the pain, suffering and death of puppies.
  • If either Dam/Sire is a known carrier, the other party must be tested CLEAR and the litter will be Endorsed against Registration of Progeny with Permissions.
  • All of the main and RKC recommended DNA health tests, must be independently verified by The Royal Kennel Club, who upload them onto the Dam and Stud’s Royal Kennel Club profiles, available for all to view.
  • Copies of my dog’s DNA results will be available at all times, within the private and exclusive Facebook Group for Waiting List families and puppy parents to have access to.
  • Mama receives additional folic acid from at least one month prior to her predicted season she is due to mate & throughout her pregnancy, to help prevent neural tube defects.
  • Mama will be scanned around 4 weeks after mating to confirm is she is in whelp.
  • Mama is weaned onto puppy food and exercise is limited as her pregnancy progresses to protect her joints (carrying the additional weight).
  • I sleep next to Mama throughout the entire pregnancy, whelp and whilst she is raising the pups.  I am always on hand to support her and her babies.
  • I undertake a thorough and detailed written assessment on each puppy as they are born covering all aspects of their health, condition and well-being during whelp (birth), immediately after and how the respond and thrive post whelp.
  • It is a systematic process which ensures I cover all aspects required to identify any potential health issues, deformities or otherwise.
  • Families within the Private Facebook Group will receive moment by moment updates throughout labour and delivery.
  • All Trinkaurity puppies (and Mama) are wormed at 3, 5 and 8 weeks of age with Panacur; a broad spectrum de-wormer.
  • The drug, dose and date of administration will be documented within your puppy’s Trinkaurity Care Plan.
  • Mama is wormed every 6 months leading up to the month she comes into season with the Veterinary prescribed worming treatment, and then from day 45 she is wormed again with panacur once daily as per recommended direction.  This is subject to change in accordance with best practice.
  • This aim is to always prevent the worm burden upon pups when they are first born.
  • All Trinkaurity puppies are microchipped between the ages of 4 and 6 weeks.
  • Transfer details are provided to puppy parents, and these are recorded in a step by step process, within the Trinkaurity Care Plan.
  • It is a legal requirement for all puppies in England and Wales for Breeder’s to have microchipped their puppies at the point of sale, which cannot be before 8 weeks.
  • The Breeder must be the first registered keeper of the puppies, however this is then transferred after point of sale.
  • I carry a microchip scanner and when new puppy parents visit, will scan my resident dogs and show their scanned microchip number against their official paperwork and health records.
  • On collection day, I will scan pup and show parents their pup’s microchip number against their pups paperwork.  This is to ensure that all puppy parents can be reassured without a shadow of doubt, that my dogs and pups are who I say they are.
  • I am a DEFRA Approved and Qualified Peddymark Implanter and am able to carry out the microchip implanting within the comfort of the puppies own whelping home here at Trinkaurity Cockers.

All Trinkaurity pups receive their first vaccination between the age of 7-8 weeks which comprise of:

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis (canine adenovirus)
  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Leptospirosis (L4)

This is to ensure I am offering my pups the very best start in life and building their immune system to fight deadly diseases is central to this.  I do not vaccinate earlier than 7 weeks due to pups still being covered by their Mama’s immunity through her milk.

It is critical that puppy parents complete the primary course of vaccinations and do not put their pup outside to play in public spaces until advised by their Veterinarian.

All of my own dogs receive annual vaccination boosters of DHP and L4, as well as Kennel Cough.

The current brand used by my Veterinary Practice is Nobivac.  Should this not be compatible with your Veterinary Practice, I will omit the vaccination during your puppy’s Breeder’s Vet check, and your puppy can begin their vaccination course with you at collection.

All families must, as per the terms within the contract, have their puppy assessed by their own Veterinarian within two working days of collection.  This is undertaken for several reasons including and not limited to:

    • You are able to begin to build a positive bond and interaction with your Veterinarian with your new puppy.
    • It is the very first time your puppy will have been on the ground outside of the single environment they have ever known, albeit just in your garden.
    • Your puppy will have been assessed by two independent Veterinarians for two very thorough health and welfare assessments at around 8 weeks of age, in which you will have a completed, signed and dated document of proof.  This ensures you have full confidence if you had to submit an insurance claim, that your puppy did not have any pre-existing conditions as determined by two independent veterinarians.
    • You will have the opportunity to discuss ongoing health and welfare care for your puppy including aspects such as: preventative health care, vaccinations schedules, worming, flea/tick options, neutering and spaying, oral hygien, diet and nutrition etc.
