Health, dna and my Breeding Role
I take my role as a Breeder very seriously, and this begins with the health and DNA profile of Mama and Stud. Consciously bring puppies into this world, I need to do all that I can to ensure that I provide every possible chance of health and well-being success to Mama and her pups.
Breeding & Health at Trinkaurity Cockers
- I monitor the health and well-being of all my girls, no matter their age, and this is continually throughout the year.
- My girls are all Veterinarian health checked every 6 months, as well as prior to breeding.
- My girls receive daily exercise, enrichment and undertake a variety of stimulating training programs.
- It is really important to me that they live an engaging and enriched life.
- They receive monthly worming, flea and tick preventative treatment, all annual vaccinations
- They all receive their annual vaccinations including Kennel Cough.
- They are all extensively DNA tested.
- My breeding girls are all BVA eye screened annually and Gonioscopy screened every 3 years are recommended.
- All information is documented in each Trinkaurity girl’s bespoke TCP (Trinkaurity Care Plan), which is available for puppy parents to view during their puppy visits.
- I will only breed from health tested, Kennel Club Registered parents with a low COI (inbreeding score).
- Parents must be fit, healthy, 18+ months of age and free from disease/illness/infestations (worms/fleas/mites).
- Mama and Stud must not be known carriers or affected of the common DNA diseases that attribute to the pain, suffering and death of puppies.
- All of the main DNA health tests, must be independently verified by The Kennel Club, who upload them onto the Dam and Stud’s Kennel Club profiles, available for all to view.
- There are DNA health tests that my girls have had, that the Kennel Club do not upload, however they have been verified by Champdogs and are on my girls profiles.
- Copies of my girls DNA results will be in your puppy’s Trinkaurity Care Plan.
- Mama receives additional folic acid from the season she is due to mate & throughout her pregnancy, to help prevent neural tube defects.
- She is scanned around 4 weeks after mating, this is the best time to confirm is she is in whelp and to provide a rough pup count (it is not 100% accurate).
- Mama is weaned onto puppy food and exercise is limited as her pregnancy progresses to protect her joints (carrying the additional weight).
- I sleep next to Mama throughout the entire pregnancy, whelp and whilst she is raising the pups. I am always on hand to support her and her babies.
- I undertake a thorough and detailed written assessment on each puppy as they are born covering all aspects of their health, condition and well-being during whelp (birth), immediately after and how the respond and thrive post whelp.
- It is a systematic process which ensures I cover all aspects required to identify any potential health issues, deformities or otherwise. You will receive a copy of your puppy’s whelp record in your Trinkaurity Care Plan.
- All Trinkaurity puppies (and Mama) are wormed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age with Panacur; a broad spectrum de-wormer. The drug, dose and date of administration will be documented within your puppy’s Trinkaurity Care Plan.
- Mama is wormed every month leading up to the month she comes into season, and then from day 45 she is wormed again begin worming. I will worm Mama until the end of her pregnancy, and again when the pups are 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age.
- This regime is to prevent the worm burden upon pups when they are first born.
- All Trinkaurity puppies are microchipped between the ages of 4 and 6 weeks. Transfer details are provided to puppy parents, and these are recorded in a step by step process, within the Trinkaurity Care Plan.
- It is a legal requirement for all puppies in England and Wales for Breeder’s to have microchipped their puppies at the point of sale, which cannot be before 8 weeks.
- The Breeder must be the first registered keeper of the puppies, however this is then transferred after point of sale.
- I carry a microchip scanner and when new puppy parents visit, will scan my girls and show their scanned microchip number against their official paperwork and health records.
- On collection day, I will scan pup and show parents their pup’s microchip number against their pups paperwork. This is to ensure that all puppy parents can be reassured without a shadow of doubt, that my dogs and pups are who I say they are.
All Trinkaurity pups receive their first vaccination between the age of 7-8 weeks which comprise of:
- Distemper
- Hepatitis (canine adenovirus)
- Canine Parvovirus
- Leptospirosis (L4 – all of my girls and previous litters have received L4 without any side effects)
This is to ensure I am offering my pups the very best start in life and building their immune system to fight deadly diseases is central to this. I do not vaccinate earlier than 7 weeks due to pups still being covered by their Mama’s immunity through her milk.
It is critical that puppy parents complete the primary course of vaccinations and do not put their pup outside to play in public spaces until advised by their Veterinarian.
All of my own girls receive annual vaccination boosters of DHP and L4, as well as Kennel Cough.
